A Brief Introduction To Limassol
A Brief Introduction To Limassol

Stretching for ten miles along the coast and nestled at the foot of Troodos mountains, Limassol is the vine centre of the island. Fronted by good quality beaches, blessed with Cyprus' mediterranean climate and a wealth of accommodation, Limassol has become one of the primary tourist destinations on the island.

Festivals and Historical Sights

Limassol is widely known for a variety of festivals occurring throughout the year. One of the more famous festivals of this region is the wine festival held in September when local vine yards offer free samples for ten days. Also, while in Limassol, don't miss out on a visit to a local vineyard to see first hand how grapes are converted to wine.

Steeped in centuries of history, Limassol also has a wealth of archaeological sites impossible to find elsewhere. The most spectacular among these sites is the ancient kingdom of Kourion. Overlooking the azure waters of Mediterranean, this Greco-Roman theatre, originally built in the 2nd century BC, has now been fully restored and is now used for musical and theatrical performances.

The ruins of Aphrodite temple perched high atop a cliff providing sweeping view of the bay are another must see while in Limassol.

Kolossi is not only famous for the exquisite Commandaria wine but also the medieval Kolossi castle. Legend has it that Richard the Lion Heart and Queen Berengaria spent their honeymoon here.

The Town Of Limassol

The carefree attitude of the people is complemented by wide seafront promenade and bustling little shopping streets. St. Andrews Street, not far from the seafront, with its quaint buildings and narrow streets where shopkeepers vie for attention must be visited if you're searching for local wares. If you have money to spend, go to Makarios Avenue which is lined with prestigious boutiques and showrooms.

Rental Accommodation

The holiday resorts and hotels are mainly found on the eastern side of the town. You'll be spoilt for a choice with numerous alternatives designed to suit all kinds of budget. Luxury hotels and grand villas lie within close proximity of economy apartments.

Limassol Night Life

There are numerous taverns, pubs, discos and night clubs strewn around the hotels and apartments. Whilst a generally friendly resort with a low crime rate, it is nevertheless important to consider personal safety and to act as you would at home. Pub hopping through the night or dancing to the latest music till the wee hours of the morning are an everyday routine here. For those less inclined to go clubbing, the wealth of restaurants and tavernas should provide suitable watering holes in which to while away pleasant evenings. There are also many tavernas and restaurants in the outlying villages within easy reach of Limassol for those seeking a more 'authentic' experience.

Beaches

There are a few beaches to choose from and most of them have the facilities of changing rooms, showers, cafes and bars. Given the ever growing popularity of Limassol, the more central beaches can become a little crowded during the height of summer. If you are in search of a little calm and tranquillity, the outskirts of the town are home to some really fantastic beaches. One such beach is ëLadies Mileí or Ladies Mile which lies to the west of the new harbour.

Limassol also boasts a newly constructed marina equipped with every facility for yachting.

Conclusion

Limassol is the second largest city in Cyprus and is famous for its fun loving and laid back attitude. With a broad range of accommodation; a choice of beaches; rich historical and cultural treasures; bustling streets with shopping for all budgets; a wide range of pubs, tavernas and restaurants; and a good night life, there is something here for all members of the holiday party.
